Grab a bucket of popcorn, settle into a deckchair, and get ready to be swept up in your chosen film — but don’t be surprised if the opening credits aren’t the only thing you hear. Sun Pictures isn’t just the world’s oldest open-air cinema; it’s also the only one operating year-round directly beneath an airport flight path, just steps from the runway.

The theatre schedules two showings a day with alternating releases, giving viewers plenty of variety – we recommend booking to do the short (15-minute) historic audio tour before your showing.

The History of Sun Pictures

Sun Pictures started out as an Asian emporium, back in 1903, when it was owned by the Yamasaki family. In later years, the family created a traditional Japanese-style playhouse in part of the building, where the theatre first officially became a place for entertainment.

The building was later purchased by a renowned pearler named Ted Hunter, who turned the space into a cinema. The doors first opened to Sun Pictures Cinema in 1916 with a showing of the silent racing drama Kissing Cup. The building survived wartime evacuations, vandalism, segregation, and enough flooding episodes that it became a running joke. The cinema even had to – briefly – close its doors in 1981 as television popularity took off.

After 80 years of intense weather changes and damage, Sun Pictures got a well-needed restoration. In 1995, the space joined the State Register of Heritage Places, and by 2004, it officially became the oldest open-air cinema in the world, as confirmed by the Guinness World Book of Records.

Now owned by Marisa Ferraz (who was responsible for the site’s restoration and continued icon status) and Ross de Wit, the cinema boasts an air-conditioned entertainment complex with twin cinemas, seating up to 377 people. Technologically, it rivals any of the best cinemas in Australia. It also has a cafe, ample parking, and a wealth of history within its walls.
